PracticeOS

For over a year and a half, one of my biggest struggles as a guitarist wasn't learning the skill itself.

It was staying consistent.

Like many skills worth mastering, guitar has delayed rewards. You don't wake up dramatically better the next morning. Sometimes it takes weeks before you finally nail a solo, improve your phrasing, or feel like you've made meaningful progress.

After reading Atomic Habits, the book, I followed the tips and started tracking every practice session in a spreadsheet.

Something unexpected, but predicted by Atomic Habits, happened.

Watching my hours accumulate made practice itself rewarding.

The more I practised, the more I wanted to practise.

But after a few months, the spreadsheet had a limitation.

It could tell me how much I had practised.

It couldn't tell me the story behind those hours.

So I built PracticeOS.

The Problem

Most practice trackers feel like productivity software.

They're full of forms, settings, graphs, and friction.

Ironically, the more effort it takes to log a session, the less likely you are to use it consistently.

I wanted something different.

Something I could open every single day without thinking and log a session in less than 15 seconds.

The Solution

PracticeOS is a lightweight macOS app designed around one simple feedback loop.

Practise.

Log it.

See your progress.

Feel encouraged.

Practise again.

Everything in the product exists to reinforce that loop.

The home screen makes daily effort visible without turning practice into admin.

What makes it different

Instead of overwhelming musicians with analytics, PracticeOS focuses on clear insights.

In just a few seconds you can see:

  • Today's practice time
  • Weekly progress
  • Monthly comparisons
  • Practice consistency
  • Your strongest days
  • Your longest sessions
  • Total hours for the year

The insights page turns raw sessions into a musical story.

Logging a session takes only a few seconds.

The app stays out of your way and lets you get back to what matters: playing your instrument.

Design Philosophy

The spreadsheet taught me something important.

Visibility creates motivation.

PracticeOS takes that one step further.

It combines the immediate clarity of a spreadsheet with the experience of a journal.

The journal gives the hours a story, not just a total.

Technical Highlights

  • Native macOS application
  • Built with SwiftUI
  • Local-first architecture
  • Editorial-inspired interface
  • High-performance analytics and visualizations
  • Custom practice journaling workflow
  • Designed and engineered from the ground up

Why I Built It

PracticeOS isn't a startup idea.

I built it because I wanted an app that made practice feel rewarding long before mastery arrives.

Ironically, the project became a reflection of the same lesson that inspired it:

Small actions, repeated consistently, eventually become part of your identity.
